KS4 Subject Preferences
Each year in January, Year 9 students are asked to indicate their preferences for study at KS4. This is an exciting time and enables students to follow a curriculum which starts to reflect their own interests and futures.
At KS4 (Years 10 & 11) students study a range of subjects across their timetable at GCSE or BTEC Level 2. These are made up of some subjects that end with final examinations and some subjects that must be studied as part of the national curriculum but that don’t have final exams at the end. These subjects are divided into the 4 following subject areas:
Core Subjects
Sciences
Humanities
Preferences
CORE SUBJECTS
Students are required to study these subjects and they are examined at the end of the course.
Students are required to study these subjects, but they are NOT examined at the end of the course.
SCIENCE SUBJECTS
Students are required to study science. Students study either combined science (2 GCSEs) or study the three sciences separately (3 GCSES).
HUMANITIES SUBJECTS
Students are required to study at least one humanities subject. Students can choose between History or Geography.
If taking combined science students will need to choose between History or Geography and will then have a further three choices from the Options List.

A full programme of information and guidance will be in place to help students make appropriate choices and to allow parents/carers to support them.
