At Teignmouth Community School, our school values are closely linked to the British Values. Throughout school life we promote the British Values in aiming to become the best versions of ourselves.
Mutual Respect
At Teignmouth Community School we value being kind to others. We appreciate and understand that there are differences in all of us: different faiths, ethnicities, genders, sexualities and abilities. We all strive to be the best versions of ourselves and have respect for all in our school community.
Students and adults all have a responsibility to display our values and we understand that we are all different. Together as one, through respecting each other, we can become the best versions of ourselves.
Tolerance
At Teignmouth Community School we value being kind to each other, showing tolerance and respect for all. Within our school, we embrace differences and we join in and work hard together in all areas of school life. This includes classroom-based learning, our social times, and wider school development such as clubs, trips and school fixtures.
We may not all agree with each other, but we accept and understand that differences are healthy. It is only our own fear and weakness, that stops us from accepting everyone.
Individual Liberty
At Teignmouth Community School we all have the right to freedom of expression, and we aim to share our views, ideas and opinions in a supportive and kind environment.
We take responsibility for our own actions and aim to make good choices. We may not always get it right, but we can make choices to present the best versions of ourselves.
Democracy
At Teignmouth Community School we have respect for each other and the views of all are acknowledged and listened to. By being kind to each other, we are able to express ourselves freely without fear.
In our learning of the curriculum and by joining in with wider development opportunities we grow into responsible citizens who understand their role in shaping the future.
The Rule of Law
At Teignmouth Community School there is a culture of high expectations supported by clear rules. By joining in with these rules we keep our site a safe and positive environment for all.
We are committed to working hard, joining in and being kind to others. Staff and students work together to uphold our rules so that we can work hard without disruption and join in in a controlled and safe environment.
By promoting the British Values across our school, both in the curriculum and through joining in with wider school life, students will develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in, and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
We aim to promote the British Values in order to:
- Enable our students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
- Enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of Britain
- Encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely.
- Enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in Britain.
- Have further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation for and respect for their own and other cultures.
- Encourage respect for other people
- Encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in Britain
- Encourage respect for other people, paying particular regard to the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010.
For each year group we have a mapped out plan to promote the British Values, and this can be seen in our assembly schedule, PSHE and subject curriculums, trips and extra clubs provision, and school events we plan each academic year.
