Dear year 6 Parents, Carers and Students,
Welcome to Teignmouth Community School, Exeter Road. We are very much looking forward to welcoming your child to us in September and write to outline some of the key details of our transition.
Part of our role in the transition, is to ensure everything is as smooth and manageable as possible. As a result of feedback received and student and parent voice, we continually adapt our transition process to ensure students arrive at TCS physically, mentally and emotionally prepared for this next exciting phase of education. We are very aware of the busy nature of year 6 (such as a SATs for example) and have therefore measured our approach to ensure that information is delivered with clarity at a time when everyone has the capacity to digest and focus.
Therefore, a steady stream of communication will follow to enable everyone to feel supported and plan appropriately for the fabulous journey ahead. As always, do not feel you have to wait; if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at TCS where we would be delighted to assist.
Starting secondary school is an exciting phase in education and we very much hope that your child is looking forward to joining us and experiencing all that TCS has to offer. We do of course recognise that along with the sense of excitement, there will understandably be a few nerves for pupils, carers and parents alike (!) and we endeavour to ensure that our transition process will help to overcome these.
Please find this link to our school prospectus for general information about Teignmouth Community school.
July Transition Days
This year, our main transition days for all of our new intake of Y7 pupils will be Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 July – working to timings of 9am-2.45pm on both days. These days are a very important part of the transition as they will give your child a chance to spend a couple of days getting to know their new school prior to starting full time in September. The days are designed to be fun but informative and will include lots of chance to explore the school site, meet new classmates and experience some lessons. In order for us to personalise the programme at TCS, please follow this link which will enable you to register. We will inform your child’s primary school of their attendance with us on this day. Please could you send them to us in their primary school uniform and with a bag containing some trainers and sports kit for PE, sun cream, a water bottle, packed lunch and a pencil case/stationery for lessons.
Parents Welcome Evening
We very much understand that the transition process is not only important for pupils, but for parents and carers too. This year we will be holding a welcome evening for new parents and carers at 6.00pm on Wednesday 20th July. This will involve a short presentation on aspects of school life at TCS and will give an opportunity to meet with key staff, including your child’s tutor, where they will introduce themselves and talk through the September start. Further information will follow in the coming weeks.
Tutor groups
Using the knowledge and advice from primary school colleagues, we will be creating six mixed ability tutor groups which will represent all of our feeder schools. This provides most new students with the reassurance that they will be with some young people they already know as well as having the opportunity to forge new friendships. We will let you know which group your son/daughter is due to join before the end of term.
Uniform and Equipment
You can begin preparing for life at TCS before the September start by purchasing our uniform online at: https://www.trutex.com/ TCS CODE: LEA000946SC
Information Sheet
As a student at Teignmouth Community School, it is vital that we have the most up to date information including the completed data collection sheet. This information allows us to communicate regularly with parents and carers whilst, more importantly, ensuring your children are safe and cared for. The following link will give you access to the Data Collection Sheet to be completed and sent back to us as soon as possible. Paper copies of this form are available from Reception.
If you have any specific information or details about your child that are not covered on the Data Collection sheet, please contact us at: StudentServices@teignmouthschool.co.uk
We hope this initial information is informative and gives you an idea of our structured programme as we move through the summer term. Please do contact the school reception should you have any further questions. We very much look forward to meeting you and your child again in the very near future.
