The Yoto Carnegies are the longest running children’s book awards, recognising outstanding achievement in writing for young people. Last week the winners were announced and for the first time the Yoto Carnegie medal for Writing is awarded to a black British author, Joseph Coelho for his beautifully descriptive novel in verse ‘The Boy Lost in the Maze’.
The ‘Rather Be Reading Group’, who have been shadowing the awards by reading the 8 shortlisted titles, celebrated with a helping of this beautiful (and delicious) cake, hand-crafted by acting head of English, Mrs McKeeman.
The Yoto Carnegie Shadowers’ Choice Medal for Writing was awarded to Tia Fisher for her thought-provoking debut novel ‘Crossing the Line’, which is also written in verse. Copies of the shortlisted and winning books are available to borrow from the library.
Being part of a book group helps to develop confidence, social, leadership, communication and critical thinking skills. It encourages students to read books they would otherwise not, thus increasing awareness of the wider world. Above all, participating in a book club fosters empathy. New members are always welcome!
