Following 2 years of disruption from Covid, TCS Ten Tors Training has started once again and we are hopeful that the 2022 event will be able to go ahead as planned. Enthusiasm for joining has been very high and we were delighted to have 22 Year 10 and 11 students walking with us on 27/11/2021.
Storm Arwen had just begun it’s assault on the UK so we were greeted with a stiff Northerly wind gusting up to 40mph and bringing the temperature down to -4C. This made the first half of the walk (the ascent up to Yes Tor and High Willhays) particularly challenging due to the absence of any cover, but the students never dipped in their determination or good humour.
Once the summit of the highest point on Dartmoor had been traversed, we were able to get some shelter from the wind and focus a little more on honing navigation skills and teamwork. The route back to the minibus via Oke Tor and the Belstone Tors was quickly managed and without major incident; always a good measure of a successful navigation. With approximately 10 miles covered in roughly 4 hours, this was an excellent introduction to walking, navigation, collaboration and resilience.
