On Monday the ‘Rather Be Reading,’ book group accompanied by Miss Brown and Mrs Booker, took the train to Exeter for a sneak peek at some really ancient texts in the Exeter Cathedral Library and Archives. The archivist and librarian enthusiastically explained how books were made before paper was invented and show-cased items from as far back as 1050. Highlights included a 14th century book of hours, which had narrowly escaped destruction and the 11th century Exon Doomsday book, which is one of the only surviving documents of its’ kind.
The students then headed for the Waterstones Café for some well-earned refreshment, a warm welcome and a really kind donation of books. All the students were exemplary in their behaviour and did Teignmouth Community School proud.
We are really grateful to the staff at Exeter Cathedral Library and Archives for sharing their time and breadth of knowledge and to Waterstones Exeter for being so generous with their space and books.
