On Thursday 24 April students in years 7, 8 and 9 were treated to a presentation from author, film maker and explorer Matt Dickinson. Matt shared his experiences of his successful ascent of Mount Everest via the treacherous North face, which he completed in 1996 the week after 9 other climbers had died in very poor weather. His book ‘The Death Zone’ tells the true story of that adventure and has been a best seller in many countries.
His combination of stunning photography, film clips, amusing and terrifying anecdotes held his young audiences captive. In addition to providing an insight into the challenges faced by anyone brave enough to attempt climbing the highest peak in the world, he drew attention to careers in film-making and highlighted the importance of reading for well-being. We were very proud of our students for their respectful behaviour and intelligent questions.
Matt writes exciting thrillers for teens, which are all available to borrow from the library or to buy at a discounted price from Waterstones via the school library.
