Our Year 10 students have just returned from a fantastic week of work experience. 158 students independently sourced their placements working with 124 different employers. Whilst most students worked in the local area, some placements were further afield, including an advertising agency in central London, working on construction with Sir Robert McAlpine and reporting for Sky Sports in Dublin.
We received excellent feedback from the employers – our students were a real credit to the school and conducted themselves professionally and with integrity.
Joanne Hussain, Careers Leader, said “Work-related learning is an essential experience for any student and we at Teignmouth Community School are so pleased that the employers we work with are accommodating and provide amazing opportunities for our students to get a taster of the world of work. The quality of this year’s placements has been outstanding and our students are very lucky to have these opportunities. We would sincerely like to thank the employers for their continued support.”
John Blake-Burke from 1st and 4 Most Garage in Teignmouth said how impressed he was by his student Billy Sharp’s willing attitude to work, his conduct and how well he fitted in, in such a short period of time.
It was Scott Richards Solicitors first time in taking a work experience student and they found it an enjoyable and positive experience which they hope to do again. Their student for the week, Owen Blackmore, willingly undertook any task given to him, with an ability to grasp things quickly and understand what was required. Owen said the experience “was above and beyond my expectations, and it solidified what I want to do in the future”.
The students really enjoyed their week in employment, as it provided a valuable insight into potential career options. They were able to receive specific careers advice and guidance directly from the employers. Mia Hexter who worked at Westcliff House in Dawlish said the week had shown her how hard you have to work to get to where you want to be.
