Law provides a grounding and basis for students to become an informed citizen. At TCS, our curriculum helps to develop the fundamental British values of students by reviewing the rule of law and how key cases have helped to shape the English Legal system and their impact on society. Through studying Law students also develop individual liberty and mutual respect of others and can identify how their decisions can influence decision making. Our curriculum also enables our students to review different viewpoints from individuals and make informed decisions based on evidence.
Students take a practical approach to learning about how laws are made and the structure of the court system. All topics are taught in an applied way, to develop students’ capacities to offer legal advice and guidance in ways that echo the professional practice of Solicitors and other legal personnel. Whether in criminal liability, the tort of negligence, or family law, students are taught to apply their knowledge to situations involving fictitious clients. During the teaching and learning, there are opportunities to give learners practice in developing employability skills in the following three main categories:
- cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology
- intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating, and influencing, self-presentation
- interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring, and development.
Through the study of law, we aim to:
- Develop key professional skills and knowledge for students in legal research and communication, whilst also developing the independent learning skills needed for university study and future employment.
- Through case studies, video clips and educational visits to the Magistrates’ Court, provide the students with the opportunity to acquire skills and techniques and utilise a variety of research and learning techniques to practice the law and know how to apply them.
- Develop the students’ interest in the world of politics and encourage debates and discussions within the groups to broaden their understanding how law impact in every area of their lives Criminology, International Relations, Public Services Management and Business.
- Give students opportunities to develop many transferable skills such as problem-solving critical analysis and negotiation skills, that will enable them to progress to university, apprenticeship, and the world of work.
- Through constant support and mentoring, provide students with opportunities to develop special attention to specific details when answering questions by correctly applying specialised legal skills.
