Applied criminology at TCS provides students with an introduction to criminal justice through the study of criminal behaviour. Students are taught through a range of teaching and learning strategies which encourage them to explore criminological theory and research. The Criminology course has elements of the other Social Sciences and highly complements the study of Sociology, Law, and Psychology.
Studying criminology at TCS gives students the insight to engage in criminological debates, encouraging them to draw upon criminological theory and evidence through developing an understanding of the criminal justice system, different types of crime, their victims, and offenders. Criminology provides students with the skills to apply their knowledge to a range of different cases studies throughout the course.
An understanding of criminology is relevant to many job roles within the criminal justice sector, social and probation work and sociology and psychology. This insight will enable students to make informed decisions about potential future career routes.
Through the study of criminology, we aim to:
- Promote opportunities to ‘think like a criminologist’ by supporting students in understanding the research process and carrying out their own practical investigation
- resent opportunities to deepen their conceptual understanding through application to novel scenarios
- Expand literacy, enabling students to use terminology with confidence and construct reports
- To develop responsible citizens who show empathy and compassion for others
- Give students opportunities to develop many transferable skills such as problem-solving critical analysis and negotiation skills, that will enable them to progress to university, apprenticeship, and the world of work
- Develop the students’ interest in society and encourage debates and discussions within the groups to broaden their understanding how crime can shape societies and lives
